January 2022 Updates

QuiltFolk Jenni Smith and Kaffe Fassett Workshop

This workshop was a great way for me to start out a new year. It was virtual on zoom, 3 hours across 2 days. Jenni Smith, a pattern designer and QuiltFolk instructor in the UK, ran the workshop on zoom. There were many videos in between the instructions on how to make the Tumbling Blocks Quilt. The videos were interviews with Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mabley in their three story London home.

The stack of fabrics on my work table are part of my “Retail Confessions” in the podcast. They are all Kaffe Fassett fabrics I ordered specifically for this workshop.

My Retail Therapy from January

In this episode I refer to my fabric shopping spree as my “retail confessions” but I think I prefer “retail therapy” . The first photo above shows the Kaffe Fassett fabrics I got for the workshop. Next, I got several fabrics from the Purl collection by Ruby Star Society, Moda fabrics. These fabrics will be used to make a case for my circular needles, and project bags.

The final fabric haul I did in January was the Duckadilly remnant sale. *Correction: In the podcast I mentioned that the Tana lawn was $9/qtr yd., but I see it has gone up to $10/ qtr. yd.

I haven’t taken a picture of the Tana lawn fabrics I got yet, but if you are familiar with the pattern names, I got Persephone in red; Annabella; Lanthe; Poppy and Amelie; Mitsi Valeria; Edenham, Wrest and Ed. Most were small remnants except for two I got 3 yds of each. I am really happy with my purchase, and look forward to sewing with this Tana Lawn!

AccuQuilt Die Cutter and Dies

This is the final splurge of January and for the year. AccuQuilt had a Black Friday sale in January. I got the electric die cutter, and a few dies. I can use all of the dies I have from my smaller Go Baby die cutter in this new one.

I find that the EPP hexagons, and strip dies, ie 2 ½ “, 2 ¼ “ etc. are good investments and will be used often. However, I do like some of the cute appliqué dies as well, when they go on sale.

When I use this machine for a few months, I will do a review on it.

QuiltFolk BOM: Patchwork and Prose

I joined the QuiltFolk first ever block of the month. This will be an interesting quilt, as the blocks will be improv to interpret favorite book cover designs. I have done a little improv piecing but not a lot. It starts in mid-March and every month Jenni Smith and Kay Walsh will host a zoom with guest presenters and instructional help for constructing the blocks. Click on the photo below to get more information on the BOM.

Completed Project: Luckyjuju Cat Doll

This is the cute cat doll I made last month. It was really quick to make. I want to make the Luckyjuju dog one next. You can find the class on Creativebug. The instructor is Katia Ferris. Also, Katia has a website at Luckyjujuworkshop.com

This is the video Mary Fons posted a few weeks ago. It has provoked discussion and controversy. I talk about this in this podcast episode. In a nutshell, this is directed towards fashion designers and online sellers that buy up hoards of vintage and antique quilts to be cut up and made into clothing, accessories etc. I am not sure if this message came across as clearly as intended due to her delivery of the message. You can watch the video for your own opinion on this topic.
